About Us

Our History

CHECK (Communities Helping to Encourage Change in Kids) was founded in 1997 by Theresa S. Prioleau as a non-profit, action-oriented organization serving eight rural communities: Cross, Eadytown, Pineville, St. Stephens, Pringletown, Ridgeville, Eutawville, and Holly Hill, South Carolina. Established to create positive opportunities for children and families with limited resources, CHECK has become a trusted community partner. Beyond annual events, CHECK collaborates with businesses, agencies, and community leaders to provide scholarships, mentorship, enrichment programs, and vital resources. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, CHECK remains committed to empowering youth, strengthening families, and fostering unity while continuing its lasting legacy of service. Through community-driven efforts, we strive to build a brighter future for all those we serve.

Our Mission

CHECK is dedicated to uplifting underserved and rural communities through inclusive, intergenerational programs that promote unity, education, and positive change. Our core initiatives include Kids’ Day, an annual event focused on health, safety, and education; the Love & Acceptance of Autism & Special Needs CommUnity, which hosts inclusive events like Tyriq’s Day and the Sneaker Ball while supporting caregivers; and CHECK Cares, launching in Fall 2025 to engage youth in uplifting the elderly. At the heart of our efforts is the CHECKMATES Youth Auxiliary, which empowers young leaders to serve their communities and make a lasting impact. We believe strong communities are built on collaboration, compassion, and shared responsibility. Through strong community partnerships and volunteer engagement, CHECK delivers programs that create lasting change and brighter futures.

Our Initiatives

Annual Kids' Day

For 28 years, the Annual Kids’ Day has been a free, family-focused event serving children and families across several rural South Carolina communities, many facing limited access to vital resources. The 28th Annual Kids’ Day in 2025 continues as the area’s largest and longest-running community gathering, bringing together over 300 participants and nearly 100 partner organizations and businesses to provide free meals, health screenings, school supplies, and engaging activities. The event grows each year, expanding partnerships to better meet the community’s needs. Beyond fun, Kids’ Day bridges gaps in access to care and support, offering tools for safety, health, education, and career and college readiness. It also fosters community connection, encouragement, and belonging. By empowering families and nurturing children, Kids’ Day reflects CHECK’s commitment to building brighter, more resilient futures in underserved communities. This event stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the lasting impact of shared commitment.

Annual Tyriq's Day

The Annual Tyriq’s Day of Love & Acceptance of Autism & Special Needs CommUnity Parade & Fun Day is a heartfelt celebration dedicated to individuals with autism and special needs. Held at Spiers Landing (Cross Park), the event features a parade, games, music, free food, and resource booths that provide families with access to vital services and community support. Named in honor of Tyriq Reid, the nonverbal son of CHECK’s CEO and Founder, Theresa S. Prioleau, who has profound autism, the event was created to shine a light on the importance of love, understanding, and inclusion. Tyriq’s life and spirit are the driving force behind the day, which serves as both a tribute and a call to action. With strong support from local businesses, churches, and agencies, the event helps bridge gaps in access to resources while raising awareness and strengthening connections among families, service providers, and advocates. Tyriq’s Day is more than just a fun event—it’s a powerful expression of community, compassion, and the belief that every individual deserves to be embraced and celebrated.

Love & Acceptance CommUnity

Love & Acceptance of Autism & Special Needs Community is a Facebook support group for mothers, caregivers, and supporters of autistic and special needs children and young adults. This warm and inclusive space offers emotional support, shared experiences, and access to helpful resources. Members meet virtually each month with local experts from various local and state agencies who provide valuable insight and guidance. The group also plans meaningful events and activities throughout the year — including our Annual Tyriq’s Day of Love & Acceptance Parade & Fun Day and the Sneaker Ball — creating joyful spaces where all are celebrated. Together, we promote understanding, build lasting connections, and spread love and acceptance.

Annual Mental Health Symposium

Our Annual Mental Health Symposium: You Are Not Alone is a vital community event dedicated to increasing mental health awareness and support. By providing a safe, welcoming space for open dialogue and education, the symposium benefits individuals and families by reducing stigma and connecting them with essential resources and services. It empowers community members with knowledge and tools for early intervention and long-term wellness, helping to create a stronger, healthier community. As part of our ongoing mission, the symposium fosters greater understanding, compassion, and unity, ensuring that no one faces mental health challenges alone. This event continues to be a cornerstone in building resilience and hope throughout our community.

Annual Sneaker Ball

Love & Acceptance of Autism & Special Needs CommUnity is proud to partner with A Mother’s Love and Unity Bay to host the 1st Annual Sneaker Ball—a FREE, inclusive celebration for individuals with special needs, their families, and supporters. This joyful evening of music and dancing creates a safe, welcoming space where everyone feels valued. Together, we are raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and building a more compassionate and united community—one sneaker at a time.

CHECK Cares For Our Elderly

CHECK Cares is a new initiative currently in its development stages, with plans to launch in Fall 2025. It is designed to uplift and support our elderly community members. By fostering connection, compassion, and community involvement, CHECK Cares will offer activities, resources, and outreach that bridge generations and promote dignity, respect, and inclusion for older adults. As we prepare for its launch, we are building a foundation rooted in love, service, and meaningful impact.

CHECKMATES Youth Program

The CHECKMATES Youth Program—CHECKS Making Achievements To Educate Students—empowers young people through mentorship, tutoring, academic support, life skills training, and community engagement. In addition to helping youth overcome social, economic, and educational challenges, the program offers meaningful service-learning opportunities that benefit rural communities, individuals with special needs, and the elderly. Through partnerships with schools, families, and local organizations, CHECKMATES builds confidence, leadership skills, and pathways to future success while fostering a spirit of compassion and community service.
